In honor of Black Background Thirty day period, the Ga Tech Scheller College is celebrating our Black college student and alumni business people. We sat down with undergraduate Aboubacar Barrie to master about his track record and expertise as a young entrepreneur.

Not lots of sophomores at Scheller can say they’ve been picked as one particular of only 22 students among the additional than 700 applicants to earn a scholarship from top fashion property Gucci. The enterprise designed the “2021 Class of Changemakers North American Scholars” application as component of their pledge to commit in group-dependent packages, specifically those helping communities of color.

Barrie, a sophomore from Guinea, West Africa and founder of Forenaire, was just one of individuals pupils.

Not only does becoming decided on by a popular manner title convey its possess benefits, but the college students selected received up to $20,000 to go after their goals of turning out to be leading designers in the vogue industry. They had been also highlighted in prestigious publications, which includes Ebony and Women’s Don Daily (WWD).

Barrie cites this honor as just one of his best achievements to day. “To be regarded by a main brand like Gucci was a solidification of all the difficult do the job and development I have been placing in,” he recalled.

Barrie confirmed a sturdy work ethic early on when he sought a part-time task at the age of 14, only to be explained to he was way too young. It was then he made a decision that he if couldn’t be hired as an employee, he’d begin his personal business enterprise and come to be his very own boss. As he tells it, his entrepreneurial spirit was born and so was Forenaire, a portmanteau created by Barrie when he requested himself, “What would a foreigner have to do to develop into a billionaire?”

Barrie’s manufacturer is unique. Observing younger grownups in casual clothes, he felt making garments that offered a polished, experienced search was a niche industry not staying tackled by other designers.

“Forenaire is a brand property that aims to produce excellent products to aid individuals appear and come to feel their ideal each individual day. The manufacturer at the moment properties ‘Forenaire Expert,’ a high-finish attire corporation that encourages young grown ups to costume additional skillfully, and ‘Forenaire Sports activities,’ a modest sportswear enterprise for Muslim athletes, producing athletic items that do not go in opposition to their religion. I came up with the two ideas after noticing the wants of these markets in my neighborhood were continue to unmet,” he mentioned.

Ever the decided founder, Barrie has confronted numerous hurdles since launching his traces in 2017. As a younger creator, gaining his parent’s support was one particular of them. Like several moms and dads, they preferred to see their son triumph in a extra common occupation.

“When I approached them in 2016 about starting the enterprise, I try to remember them declaring ‘No, we will not allow you start out a organization. Permit this go and emphasis on your faculty.’ Now, immediately after observing all the development I’ve been making, they are amongst my leading supporters,” he said.

Like most founders just starting off out, Barrie confronted difficulties in attaining access to cash and finding mentors.

“In my early many years, I was executing very much every thing by myself which bundled a large amount of trial and mistake. It was not right until 2019 that I began obtaining a good assist and mentorship system to support me out,” he claimed.

While making his brand name, Barrie, who is concentrating in internet marketing, recognizes Scheller for the aid it has offered.

“Given the two decades I have been at Scheller, I have to say it has performed a major position in serving to me turn out to be an entrepreneur and innovator. I want to give a special shoutout to all the Scheller advisors that acquire the time to chat with me, listen to my concepts, and sooner or later connect me to far more sources. I would also like to figure out all the significant courses that put together people today like myself for a earth that is now dominated by know-how,” he reported.

When questioned what getting a Black founder implies to him, his remedy is deliberate, optimistic, and forward-imagining.

“Being a Black founder signifies that I can do it! I way too, can possess and operate a productive organization. It suggests that in a company earth dominated by white CEOs, Black folks all around the globe have the capacity to be just as productive in building impactful organizations. It also usually means that younger Black individuals like me, and any opportunity Black founders out there, have the skill to make corporations that carry beneficial alter and effect to their communities.”

For Aboubacar Barrie, his journey is just starting, but he’s previously producing a route for other young Black founders to comply with.
