What are the top trends for the spring/summer 2022 season?
We’ve spoken to two personal stylists Lindsay Edwards, of Reimagise Personal Styling, and Abbey Booth, who runs online fashion forum Stories with Clothes, about what will be hot next season so we can prepare our wardrobes for spring/summer.
They told us that there are eight trends we’ll all be wearing. They are:
- Stripes
- Colour – bright orange, baby blue and very peri
- Over-sized blazer
- Nineties and noughties reveal
- Fruit patterns
- Floral patterns
- Victorian inspired clothing
- Quilted patchwork clothing
We’ve chosen one fabulous piece of clothing from each trend below so you can get your wardrobe spring/summer ready too.
Be sure to keep up with our Fashion and Beauty page too which is regularly updated with all the best clothing, accessories make-up, skincare and haircare buys.
French vibes with a classic stripe
Stripe tops are an ‘absolute wardrobe staples for spring’, according to personal stylist Lindsay Edwards.
Personal stylist Abbey Booth agrees: “Who doesn’t love a Breton stripe – characterised by the classic horizontal stripe – it’s practical, timeless and looks great paired with a biker jacket, jeans and trainers for that effortless French vibe so many of us admire.
It’s not just horizontal stripes that are fashionable for the coming season either.
Abbey added: “Vertical stripes are lengthening and elongating so very flattering for petites.”
Available in a range of colourways, including a pink and blue stripe and a mustard and ivory stripe.
Available in sizes 6 to 22.
Lifting your mood with a flash of bright colour
Dopamine dressing – wearing bright colours to lift your mood – is going to be big.
Lindsay said: “The hottest colours for this spring are bright orange, baby blue and ‘very peri’ – a specific shade of periwinkle named Colour of the Year by Pantone.
“All are fabulous colours which, if you’re feeling bold enough, can be worn in combination for a particularly striking effect.”
Abbey advises bringing colour in to your accessories as well as your clothing.
She said: “If you’ve not tried colour before look at accessories or a yellow bag to add that pop of colour”
To keep on trend with this year’s colour of the year, try this purple mesh frill top from River Island. Available in sizes 6 to 18.
David Byrne-cool with an over-sized blazer
Abbey said: “Seen often on the runways with a dress or skirt combination, the over-sized blazer is a hard working layer as it will be perfect for layering up in the spring on cooler days.
“It’s a great way to add colour to your wardrobe too and will add a tailored look to many simple outfits.”
Available in sizes 8 to 16.
Cute accessories with a nineties revival
Lindsay said: “The shoulder bags of the nineties are having a huge resurgence, as are long pendant necklaces.”
Abbey also said that we should think how Britney Spears dressed in the 1990s; low cut jeans, crop tops and sparkly butterfly motifs, as we can prepare for that to come back to the forefront of fashion – (though of course this look isn’t for everyone!).
If you want to reminisce about the 90s but want to do it in a more subtle way then this baguette bag from Mango is a cute and practical way to do it. Available in black or neutral so it will go with every outfit. Carrie Bradshaw would be proud.
Spritz this up with a fruit pattern
For those who love a playful print, lemons, oranges and strawberries will be everywhere during the spring/summer season, according to Lindsay.
Try this Alexa Midi Dress from Nobody’s Child in the Abbey Strawberry design. Not only does this dress have a fun all-over fruit print, but it’s also in a bold and bright green colour which perfectly lends itself to the spring season.
The dress is made of viscose too, so it’s the ideal floaty and breathable fabric for keeping cool as the days heat up.
Available in sizes 6 to 18.
Flower power
Now we know what you’re thinking, ‘florals for spring. Groundbreaking’.
However, there’s a reason why florals continue to be popular year after year and season after season, because they are timeless.
Florals will feature heavily this season in all shapes and sizes, from romantic ditsy prints to the more oversized blooms you can be sure to find a style you love, say Lindsay.
It features a fit-and-flare design with a belted waist to give you that sleek silhouette, as well as a feminine revere collared neckline and short roll sleeves.
Keep it prim with Victorian-inspired clothing
Lindsay said: “For those who love a romantic edge to their look, there are a stunning selection of high necked, Victorian style blouses on the high street adorned with lace and ruffles.”
This Juliana pleated ruffle blouse in a classic ivory colour from Monsoon is a pretty choice. It’s a charming piece for both work and weekend. In soft, lightweight fabric it boasts vintage-inspired elements like a frilled neckline, pleated chest and fabric-covered buttons.
Buttons can be done all the way to the top, or if you’re not feeling a full Victorian look but rather want a nod to the era you can undo some of the buttons to create a V-neck.
Available in sizes 8 to 22.
Childlike wonder with quilted patchwork clothing
Lindsay said: “The quilted jackets of 2021 are still very much on trend, but the updated version for this season is a quilted patchwork jacket or gilet.
“In fact, this patchwork effect is heavily featured across the entirety of womenswear, like dresses, skirts, blouses and handbags too.”
These Playful Patchwork Shorts from Joe Browns are ideal for the spring. Made from light wash denim in a relaxed fit, with cute roll-up detailing on the legs and peppered with colourful patchwork, they are the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe. Now we’ve just got to wait for the sun to make an appearance.
Availabble in sizes 8 to 18.
